  • satsuki question

Hi I live in Zone 5 heat zone 6. I would like to try satsuki, but it just gets too cold here even with winter protection. My question: I have an orchid greenhouse that in winter is about 55 F at night and about 70 F daytime, humidity runs about 50%...can I over winter satsuki in these conditions?

  • Yellowing pines

I have a pitch pine and a scotts pine both of which I got last year. The pitch pine is an estimated 30 yrs old and the scotts probably not more than 5-6, however, their needles have turned a pale green. They are not dried out and are not falling out. The pitch pine has been in the same pot for 9...

  • Keeping in Fridge??

I have a Chinese Elm, and the winters here don't get cold enough to give it a proper dormancy period. I heard from a few people that keeping it in a fridge could work. Is this alright? And if so, do I have to spread mulch over the soil/grit?

  • First winter with snow - stupid question

So this California boy is now shovelling snow on a regular basis. (For those of you who know me from San Fran or San Diego.......ICK!!!) Here are some pics of my hardy trees (lodgepole, ponderosa, limber pine, jack pine). These were all buried in pea gravel, then mulched. I know snow cover is a...

  • Please help restore confidence

I've been confident until today that I have a great system working here. I've got a maple,elm,3junipers all in dormancy right now. I've kept them in an old refridgerator(still works) that when warm(50's) will keep my trees below 45degree's. Worked great with 2 junipers last year. We had a cold...

  • A question about malathion

Recently, as the temps were getting colder, I noticed a few pine aphids crawling amongst the recently worked on pines (the ants tip me off every time). I waited a few days, and made sure the spraying off with water didn't do the job, then applied a misting over all the pines. The following day,...

  • Temperature Fluctuations in "Cold House"

All, I live in NJ-Zone 6B I believe, and recently purchased the SpringHouse™ Portable Greenhouse Kits to overwinter my pines and maples. I also purchased one of those remote electronic thermometers at Lowe's for $12 that enables me to remotely monitor the temperature in the greenhouse from...

  • Canadian winter plus balcony?

Hi I live in Canada and winters get pretty harsh. I collected a chinese juniper and hinoki cypress in the spring of 06 (in my gallery) and am wondering what i should do to protect them. I am considering buying some mulch and covering the top of the pots but am not sure if this is the best way...
