  • JBP suggestions

i feel like i need to wire these branches down some but am unclear on something if i wire the branches down to a more horizontal level - the needles/candles that having been growing (vertically) will be pointing outwards rather than straight up and down. will they "self correct" over time or...

  • Air layering Question for Japanese Maples

Hi all, This will be my first message here. I bought a new Japanesse Maple last weekend. It is about 180 cm (6 feet) tall. I have bought it for is nebari and lower trunk. As the season do not allow me to work on it much, I am planning to divide the tree to several peieces by air layering. The...

  • Questions on Air-layering

I have been doing a lot of air-layers lately and some questions have been running through my mind. First of all, how should you make your cuts in relation to the nodes on the branch? Do they have an impact on the roots? Should you include nodes in the region that you strip the bark from or do...

  • Not so bright move

As the title suggests, I made a not so bright move. I decided to do an airlayer on my Brazilian Raintree over the winter. Indoors, it is under 110 watt CF lighting by a South facing window. I choose a lower branch close to the pot. Instead of taking peat moss and wrapping it around the cut, I just...

  • Thread Grafted Hornbeam Collected

I've been training this tree in the ground for little over a year. Last spring I used 3 suckers to do thread grafts. They all seem to have made it. I went ahead and collected it a few weeks ago. Here's a couple shots of it. I didn't get a pic of the front. So you can't really see the trunk...

  • olive air layer

does anyone know how well olives respond to airlayering? I've tried taking cuttings at various times of year and various sizes and had no success (i've never had problems rooting cuttings with other plants). If they do air layer well, is there a best time of year for it?

  • Coral and bonsai?

Hey everyone, I'm new here :) I've been wanting to try out some rock planting for a while, and, being a bit of a scavenger whenever it comes to bonsai material, I went sifting through dad's rock collection in the garage (he used to go on business trips to mines around the world, and I guess the...

  • Interesting Potting Method

Ok so I'm still very new to Bonsai. It's a bit over a year and it's been great. After showing this to my mentor Mr. Rochester "Super Dave" we thought it was a good idea to put it up for discussion here so please take a look at these pictures and just let me know what you think. What would the...

  • Is it possible to do another trunk cut in order to make a better broom?

Hello everyone! I've acquired a Carmona Macrophylla / Fukien Tea bonsai in a broom style. It's about 8 years old and seems to be quite healthy. The only problem is that this tree was bought from a supermarket, and so the branch structure is pretty pathetic. A lot of chunky branches cross each...
