collecting drarfted trees in the appalcian mountains, east tennessee

    Thread Status:
I live at the bottom of the blue ridge mountains about 30 minutes.  i am wanting to get back into the hobbie and in the past i have read that you can find, if willing to scout, trees where the seeds have fallen in crevis's of rocks and the roots and tree are dwarfted and could be hundreds of years old.  I doubt I will find anything like that; however, I would like to collect some trees from nature that are dwarfted by nature in the mountains and would like some advise of what to look for, what type of tree that would be indigenous to tennessee.  I have some beautiful trays from when i bonsiaed in the past.  also, can you drawf trees that are usually large, such as red maple or regular dogwood?  My funds are limited right now, my mom is sick and i am taking care of her.  i could always buy seeds but i would like to try the scouting.  any advise appreciated.  email, [email protected]
