  • I've got Crabs

My wife's Uncle died last December and she is executer of the will and estate. The house finally sold in this terrible housing drought and it will close on May 30th. I have been keeping up the yards since it has sat vacant. Yesterday I went out for my usual cutting of the grass and cleaning the...

  • Flamboyan Tree From Seed

When I was in the Dominican Republic 7 years ago I picked up a seed pod from the Beautiful Flamboyan Tree. It laid in a drawer until a few weeks ago and I decided to see if I could encourage the seed to sprout. After about a month in the pot nothing happened in a heated bed. I then remembered that...

  • Mugo landscape collecting - timing?

I've got a landscape mugo in the yard that needs to be removed. Of course, it's heading for a pond basket and eventual bonsai. But my question is, when to collect? Reading Vance's posts would suggest that June may be the best time, since that's when he does major root work. However, he's...

  • Lonicera

I collected this today. I have hundreds of these growing on my property. There are essentially two varieties of honeysuckle: one with large leaves and one with small leaves. This one has larger leaves. Does anyone know if they reduce well and does anyone know if they heal over cuts well?

  • Trip To The Mountains, Part 3

Here we have several photos of some of the trees that were of interest. One is a dead Red Spruce tree, we saw three similar trees, all dead. I know there must be some of these that are still alive, someplace in those mountains. A small grove of Hawthorns and two very nice naturally dwarfed...

  • Trip To The Mountains, Part 2

See my first post for an explanation of what these photos are about. This shows my son with a Yellow Birch we found. It was growing on a large granite bolder. There was a patch of moss about 2 ft. long and 1 ft. wide just sitting on the sloped top of this bolder. The tree was growing in the...

  • Trip To The Mountains

My older son and I went up to the Virginia mountains yesterday. In this post I have included general photo of the area and then two more of a wild Blueberry bush we stumbled across. That is me with the Blueberry and a close up of it's trunk. The mountain has a vast bald area and the top...

  • Time to Collect Coast Live Oak?

I found an area which will be covered in houses before next year, and an awsome Live Oak which has alot of potential IMO. I have been told the best time to collect oaks on the central coast is December through February. Just wondering what my chances are looking like? I'll be taking some pics,...

  • Large Hornbeam

This hornbeam is on my property. It is large. The visible nebari extends approximately two feet across. Anyone think it's worth the effort. I have all the time I need and am prepared to do it over multiple seasons.
